Motivational high-five and countdown


Hey there! As promised, I wanted share some of the tools I learned from motivational guru Mel Robbins. I’m so thankful to my friend for inviting me to hear her speak. It was nothing short of magical, I tell ya!

First, let’s explore what Mel Robbins suggests we add to our toolkit. I’ll paraphrase but the strategies were high-fiving yourself in the mirror and doing a 5-second countdown before launching yourself into action. Sounds simple, right?! But both are soo powerful! We high-five people we support and when you look in the mirror and high-five yourself, it’s a powerful acknowledgement!

We support, and we encourage them with this signal to keep going, keep your head held high. Even when you’re not having a great game, your coach would give you a high five, welcome you back into the huddle with a “bring it in” and would tacitly let you know you tried, it’s ok, and you’ll do better next time. So when you look in the mirror, smile, high-five yourself and know that you’re on your own team!!

Additionally, Mel says,“If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea.” (Mel Robbins) So very shortly after you think it, countdown from 5. 5,4,3,2,1 and go do it! It’s incredible what you can do if you don’t talk yourself out of it, or linger too long.
